How to Add Cannabinoids to a SALVE Melt-and-Pour Salve Base

Adding cannabinoids to a pre-formulated melt-and-pour salve base is a straightforward process that allows you to create high-performing herbal topicals with minimal setup. Because our lipid-dense base is already crafted with a balanced combination of rich plant oils, botanical seed butters, and protective waxes, there is no need for additional carrier oils, extra additives, or complex formulation steps.

This guide outlines the precise equipment and two-part process needed to accurately calculate, dissolve, and integrate your cannabinoids into our base without compromising their potency.

Equipment & Supplies Needed

Raw Ingredients:

  • SALVE Melt-and-Pour Salve Base

  • Oil-Soluble Cannabinoids: Any oil-compatible cannabinoid format, such as:

    • CBD Isolate Powder: Pure crystalline powder that dissolves effortlessly into warm lipid matrices.

    • CBD Distillate or Broad/Full-Spectrum Extracts: Viscous extracts containing a rich profile of cannabinoids and natural terpenes.

    • Cannabinoid Tinctures or Extracts Pre-Infused in Oil: Any lipid-based extract (such as MCT oil, hemp seed oil, or jojoba-based infusions).

    • Minor Cannabinoid Isolates & Distillates: Such as CBG, CBN, or CBC in isolate or extract form.

  • Sanitizing Alcohol (97%–99% Isopropyl Alcohol): For sterilizing work areas, equipment, and final packaging.

Equipment:

  • Digital Scale: (Capable of switching between ounces and grams)

  • Stainless Steel Measuring Cup or Scoop

  • Double Boiler Setup

  • Heat-Safe Glass Measuring Cup or Beaker: (For melting the retained small portion)

  • Digital Thermometer: (Crucial for monitoring temperature thresholds)

  • Mixing Spatula or Stirring Utensil (stainless steel, no silicone)

  • Spray Bottle (for alcohol solution)

  • Clean Tins or Jars: (For final pouring and setting)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 0: Sanitization & Prep Protocols

Before beginning any formulation work, thoroughly spray and wipe down your work surface, utensils, digital scales, glass vessels, stainless steel scoops, and the insides of your clean tins or jars with 97%–99% isopropyl alcohol. Allow all tools and containers to air-dry completely so that no residual alcohol remains before raw materials are introduced.

Fill the bottom portion of your double boiler about 1/3 with water and set on the stove. Overfilling water can cause increased condensation and water splashing when pot is being heated.

Part 1: Weighing, Melting the Base, and Calculating Cannabinoids

  1. Weigh the Desired Salve Base: Place the top pot portion of the double boiler on the digital scale, tare out the scale so it reads zero. Be sure to set the unit of measurement to ounces (oz). Scoop out your desired amount of solid base from your pail using a stainless steel measuring cup or scoop, and write down the exact weight in ounces before melting; we will need that measurement for a future step.

  2. Melt the Bulk Base: Place the bulk portion of your base into your double boiler over medium heat.

  3. Calculate Your CBD Dosage: While the bulk base is melting, perform your cross-multiplication calculation based on the exact weight (in oz) of the base you measured in Part 1 to determine the exact total amount of cannabinoids required for your target strength. [See post: How to Calculate and Measure Cannabinoids for a Salve Base]

  4. When It's Safe To Remove From Heat:  Heat slowly until the base becomes completely clear and you can see the bottom of the pot. Do not exceed 150F (66C). Stir occasionally as it approaches full melt, dissolving any floating bits or clumps. Once fully clear, remove the double boiler from the heat source. Carefully lift off the top portion of the pot, and using a paper towel, dry any moisture from all around, then set aside.
  5. Remove a Small Portion of Salve: From the melted salve, pour roughly 1/4 to 1/2 cup (this does not need to be exact); from your pre-weighed batch into a heat-safe glass vessel (Pyrex glass measuring cup or beaker). This reserved base will be used specifically to dissolve your cannabinoids.

Part 2: Measuring and Dissolving the Cannabinoids

  1. Weigh the Cannabinoids in Grams: Set your digital scale to grams (g), put the retained portion of salve (in glass measuring cup or beaker) on the scale and tare it out, so the scale reads zero, and precisely weigh out your calculated amount of oil-soluble cannabinoids with the amount determined from Part 2: Step 3.

  2. Dissolve the Cannabinoids: Add your weighed cannabinoids directly to the hot, reserved liquid base. Stir thoroughly until the cannabinoids are completely dissolved and fully incorporated into the lipid matrix.

Part 3: Combing Base with Dissolved Cannabinoids

  1. Combine and Mix: While the salve is still hot and clear to the bottom, pour the cannabinoid-rich reserved mixture into the bulk melted base. Stir continuously and thoroughly for 2 full minutes to ensure an even, homogeneous distribution throughout the entire batch. No need to use hand emulsion blender, stirring is all that is needed.
  • Pour and Set: Carefully pour or use the glass turkey baster to transfer the finished liquid salve into your clean, sanitized tins or jars. Allow the containers to sit undisturbed at room temperature for 45 min - 1 hour or until fully solid. For large portions, allow to sit longer. Do not cap until container is completely cooled. Only secure lids tightly when the product is set and the container does not feel warm to the touch. Store in a cool, dry place. Do not refrigerate or freeze your salve.

Essential Best Practices

  • Zero Water Contamination: Ensure all vessels and stirring utensils are completely dry after alcohol sanitization. Anhydrous (water-free) salves must be kept completely free of moisture to remain naturally self-preserving and shelf-stable. Any condensation or moisture can grow fungus and mold colonies.

  • Avoid Rapid Cooling: Let the filled containers cool naturally at room temperature. Placing molten salve in a refrigerator or freezer can cause surface condensation or uneven setting.

  • Thorough Homogenization: Stirring for a full two minutes after combining both portions ensures every poured jar contains a consistent concentration of cannabinoids.

  • Create a Shiny Surface: After the salve has cooled, you can use a heat gun on low heat to gently flash melt the top to give your salve a nice shiny and smooth.
